Fire Down Below may have sounded great on paper, but it is a disastrous movie where we
get to contemplate several careers that shouldn’t have come together in this particular way.
Over-the-hill glamour queen Rita Hayworth barely escapes with her dignity, which is more than
one can say for the awful miscasting of newly-minted star Jack Lemmon. His impersonation of a
tough-guy sailor is laughable, especially when set next to hulking Robert Mitchum.

The lumpy production plays like two unconvincing films grafted together and is mainly watchable
to see its cast put through its embarassing paces. As an early producing effort of Albert R.
Broccoli, Fire Down Below will also seem unusually familiar to devotees of the James Bond
films - it shares situations, casting, locale and music with the first Bond effort, Dr. No.

Synopsis:

Charter boat bums Felix Bowers (Robert Mitchum) and Tony (Jack Lemmon) agree to
transport hot-potato passenger-sans-passport Irena (Rita Hayworth) between islands for a hefty
fee. Irena is a hardened European refugee who has been used by men and now uses them to stay
ahead of the law. Alone with them on a small boat, she soon creates a rift between the
hard-drinking partners.

Let’s get the tenuous James Bond connection out of the way first. Fire Down Below is a
production of Warwick, the partnership between Albert Broccoli and Irving Allen, who at this time were
in the early stages of trying to get a James Bond movie deal going. It’s easy to imagine them working on
this film while hob-nobbing with Ian Fleming. Other similarities with Dr. No are probably
just superficial, but we can’t help noticing the presence of Bernard Lee, 007’s M. Cedric Connor’s
Jimmy Jean boatman character corresponds fairly directly with Bond’s helpmate Quarrel in Dr. No.

Broccoli and Allen split up before Bond came about, and Allen later presented his own parallel Matt
Helm spy series. They both must have been concentrating on the deal-making, because Fire Down Below
is a real mess. The powerhouse casting puts three big names on the marquee, but the actors don’t
begin to mesh and are given a terrible faux-hip script to read. Even laid-back hep-cat Mitchum can’t
do anything with the bad dialogue lines. ?
1

The film looks expensive and cheap at the same time. The CinemaScope frame isn’t used for anything
expressive. Too many blah shots just sit there. There’s some reasonably good location work but also
lots of iffy process shooting back in England, and weak stage recreations like the big party scene. A
calypso band that performs the limbo under the titles, wear masks to play unrelated musicians
on another carribean island later on.

It’s tough to blame Robert Parrish, who has been responsible from some stunningly good movies such as
The Purple Plain. But someone
has to take the fall for all the awkwardness on screen and in the performances. When we first see
Lemmon and Mitchum, they’re wearing ridiculous ‘tough-guy’ sailor outfits. Mitchum just looks like
he was shoehorned into a silly costume, but poor Lemmon tries to act tough and is just awful. He even
effects a foolish-looking tough-guy walk, holding his arms as if he had a rash in his armpits. There
was a good reason Lemmon specialized in meek-mensch characters - he just doesn’t convince as
a hard-drinking mug. The script, obviously not altered to fit these particular stars, pairs them in
brawls and fistfights that are just ludicrous. Robert Mitchum is a good actor, just to attempt
to play these fights where Lemmon comes out on top!

The same script has Lemmon instantly attracted to Hayworth. She always carries a certain class about
her but frankly no longer had the looks or the aura to turn men to jelly. Lemmon comes on strong and
faithful, and Rita makes speeches alluding to the darkness in her background (”I was degraded!”)
which a clean-thinking young man could never understand. It never begins to make sense.

Naturally, every shady character is looking for some angle to bed the desirable Hayworth, including
a sleazy hotelier (Eric Pohlman) who threatens her with exposure to the police. Although he denies
it at first, Mitchum’s older and harder wharf rat also gravitates toward Rita. He betrays the
overeager Lemmon, but the romantic triangle never begins to function in a way that makes us care.

Director Parrish offers some visual nods to Rita’s legacy. A shipboard swim (to a pleasantly catchy
50s vocal of the title tune) begins with Rita flipping her red hair in close-up. The shot would
evoke Gilda, if it didn’t look so awkward composed in CinemaScope. A big mardi gras scene turns
into a rather impoverished dance sequence where Rita nevertheless shows her old style in some fast
moves with ubiquitous goateed dance choreographer Tutte Lemkow
(Bonjour Tristesse, The Guns of
Navarone
,
The Fearless Vampire Killers).

This picture has enough story to fill an hour, but is padded out to almost two with the addition
of a third act that seems grafted from an entire different script. Running from the law and trying to
return to Rita, Jack is trapped on board a munitions ship that threatens to blow up. The entire story
restarts, introducing a new set of characters. Doctor Bernard Lee, harbormaster Herbert Lom and sailor
Bonar Colleano (Christ in Concrete)
meander about while we wonder where the other movie went. Mitchum and Hayworth eventually show up to
try and rescue Lemmon but the result is one unsatisfying storyline followed by an irrelevant chaser.

Pure marquee power apparently saved Allen and Broccoli from boxoffice doom, even though this
particular trio of stars never had a prayer of making the picture float. Fire Down Below is
interesting mainly as a study piece for filmmakers - they can’t all be gems, but this was a real
misfire.

Among the familiar lower-case English actors in the cast is Anthony Newly as a conniving bartender.

Columbia TriStar’s DVD of Fire Down Below is very handsome transfer of this entertaining
but quizzical show. The enhanced image shows off the pretty caribbean exteriors and reveals the
cheapness of some of the phony English interiors. The sound is basic but clear enough; the show has an
attractive score with a tropical flavor similar to Dr. No.

There are no extras, just some Columbia promo trailers. The packaging incorrectly states the aspect
ratio as 2:55, the early (’53-’54) ultra width of the earliest CinemaScope films. The cover graphic
tries to blend the three actors from separate stills - note that the Hayworth image is filched from
a smaller photo on the back.

Maybe office assistants are writing copy text at Columbia DVD now. The desperate blurbs on the
back of this one are utter nonsense, saying that “… a wild limbo becomes a sensuous dance solo,
climaxing with the suggestive removal of (Rita’s) high heels.” Huh? The text also tells us that
Fire Down Below had critics “looking at Hayworth for the first time as a serious actress,
instead of just another glamour girl.” Thanks for the great transfer, Columbia, but spare us the
hooey. Enjoyable messes don’t come any better than this.

On a scale of Excellent, Good, Fair, and Poor,
Fire Down Below rates:

Movie: Fair +

Video: Excellent

Sound: Very Good

Supplements: none (promo trailers)

Packaging: Keep case

Reviewed: February 11, 2004

Footnote:

1. Although I made a note to
remember a particular zinger for some future movie montage: In one sober conversation,
straight-faced Mitchum turns to the camera and says, “What, me gay?”

According to Webster’s, a “spoof is “a light humorous parody.” By that definition, writers-directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer’s latest stab at the genre, “Epic Movie,” is anything but. While “Epic Movie” portends to skewer blockbusters such as “Superman Returns” and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” it’s really nothing more than a disjointed series of scenes and references cobbled together as a backdrop for sophomoric humor. Yet it was also the No. 1 movie at the box office over the weekend, bringing in an estimated $19.2 million. ADVERTISEMENT The film features Jayma Mays, Adam Campbell, Kal Penn (”Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle”) and Faune A. Chambers (”White Chicks”) as, of all things, 20-something “orphans” who are plucked out of scenes from “The Da Vinci Code,” “X-Men” and “Snakes on a Plane.” From there, they end up in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory before stepping into the world of Narnia, where they take on the roles of C.S. Lewis’ sibling protagonists. Narnia — or Gnarnia as it’s called for “legal reason” — is the main stage for the bulk of the film. A smattering from other films appears throughout, including Darrell Hammond’s dead-on takeoff on Johnny Depp’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” character, one of “Epic’s” few noteworthy performances. For her part, Mays is game as the earnest but dim Lucy, and Campbell is passable as Peter, the leader of the group who must overcome his mutant power of sprouting chicken wings and fleeing at the first sign of danger. Penn and Chambers, on the other hand, are stiff and miscast. The real problem with “Epic Movie” is that while it does a decent job imitating films, it never bothers to make fun of or have fun with them, which is what Friedberg and Seltzer did so well with “Scary Movie.” “Epic Movie.” MPAA rating: PG-13 for crude and sexual humor, language and some comic violence. Running time: 1 hour, 26 minutes.

Everybody is addicted to something, and for Justin Cobb, it’s his thumb. He loves to suck it while sleeping or awake. He has to hide his addiction though (only a few people know about it, including family and doctors), as it would be embarrassing if everyone knew, so when he finally stops sucking his thumb, his life and that of everyone around him will change. This is the story of Mike Mills’ weird but wonderful Thumbsucker.

Lou Pucci gives a starmaking performance as Justin. Quite, tormented, alienated from everybody because of his thumbsucking addiction. He’s part of the debate team at school though, but I think only to be close to his friend Rebecca (Kelli Garner, much hotter than a few years ago when she played a drug addict in Larry Clark’s Bully), the debate team captain, and the girl he secretly loves. They get together one day, but Justin’s thumb problem prevents him to go further. Then something happens when he goes to the dentist.

In one of the best scenes of the movie, Justin’s dentist Perry hypnotizes him to cure him, to free him from his thumb. Perry is played by Keanu Reeves, who gives the classic Keanu performance he always gives. But his voice is perfect for this role, and the dialogue during the hypnosis sounds like stuff Morpheus would say. It works though, and so Justin stops sucking his thumb, but right after that he starts going crazy. He starts losing control of himself and he can’t concentrate, and going back to thumbsucking is not an option (I wont spoil the reason).

And so he’s diagnosed for ADD and given Ritalin, and just like that he’s good as new. Full of energy and confidence, Justin goes to lead the debate team, even winning awards. This makes for the second great scene in the movie, as Justin and the 3 girls in the debate team (Rebecca has left the team after Justin’s rejection, for reasons not given) go with their debate teacher Mr. Geary to a debate in a different city. They stay in a hotel and Justin demands for him to stay in the same room as the girls since they are all of the same age and should stay up all night preparing for the debate. Mr. Geary, played by Vince Vaughn, accepts, and after that Justin convinces him to buy them beer. What follows is the dream of any guy, the girls are cute and they all get drunk, but they get too playful, and nothing ends up happening. It’s a great scene though, specially all the first parts with Vince, and it’s all backed with great music which I’ll talk about later.

Justin changes once again after a debate rival informs him that Ritalin is only molecules away from cocaine, which is true I think, so he stops taking them, and just like that his energy goes down, he loses concentration, can’t debate and leaves the team.

He goes back to Rebecca, who is now a stoner at school. Justin becomes a stoner too, and here’s when the story loses it for me. I can’t quite describe why but I love everything up until that point, and then it’s just ok.There’s one more great scene though, as we are introduced to Matt Schramm (played by Benjamin Bratt), a big time actor whom Justin’s mom Audrey (played by Tilda Swinton) loves. Audrey starts working in a rehab facility for celebrities, and Justin finds out that Matt goes there because of drug abuse. Justin thinks his mom is having an affair with the actor so he sneaks into the facility at night to spy on them, only to find Matt hiding in the bushes in the back smoking. Matt tells him the story of how Audrey (not knowing that Justin is her son) saved his life. The story is disturbing, and taking out of Trainspotting or something like that. It’s amazing.

There’s also Vincent D’Onofrio who plays Justin’s father Mike. He hates the thumbsucking and even when Justin stops they have problems communicating. Mike used to be a football star, but an injury kept him from going pro. He’s now very competitive, specially with Perry. They compete all the time in marathons and stuff like that but Perry always beats him.

The soundtrack is excellent, with original music from Elliott Smith and Tim DeLaughter. The songs by DeLaughter are performed by The Polyphonic Spree, and they work perfect in the movie if a little overused at times. And the dialogue is great, from Keanu’s words of wisdom to the debate speeches, is all excellent. I loved the movie, despite that loss of energy towards the end. But on the whole, Thumbsucker has great performances, music, and writing, and it’s one of the most original movies of the year. All thanks to Mike Mills’ great work, can’t wait for his next movie.

Ghost Ship
This is a decent film defintely worth a rental. Basically some strange occurences happen on a ship at sea and it is never seen or heard from again. Several years later some treasure hunters find the ship and go on board to see what they can find and to discover what happened to the people on the ship. They have absolutely no idea what they are getting themselves into.

Acting is ok. Nothing outstanding and everyone knew their lines and no one came across flat. I will say that each character in the movie fit into a particular role in any horror film which took away from the film just alittle.

The FX in this movie was by far the best thing in the entire film. The opening scene in particular is amazing. It is done all with CGI but it still looks good and doesn’t degrade the movie at all.

The director did a nice job at pulling the essential ideas from the script and making it into a success on the screen. I think the director in this case did everything he could do to make this a decent film.

Super Size Me (2004) / Documentary

MPAA Rated: PG-13 for language, sexual references, drug references, and a graphic medical procedure Running Time: 96 min. Cast: Morgan Spurlock, Alexandra Jamieson, Bridget Bennett, Dr. Lisa Ganjhu, Dr. Daryl Isaacs, Dr. Stephen Siegel, Don Gorske Director: Morgan Spurlock Screenplay: Morgan Spurlock

Morgan Spurlock sat on his mom?s couch one Thanksgiving and saw a well-publicized news report about two girls who were suing fast food giant McDonalds for their obesity and health problems.  At first glance, these sorts of suits seem completely ridiculous and unfounded.  Of course eating mass quantities of fast food isn?t good for you!  It?s mostly fat-laden, greasy, and filled with some of the cheapest ingredients available.  Spurlock initially agreed, but after thinking about it a bit, decided there might be some reason to be alarmed.  McDonalds and the makes of unhealthy snacks spend hundreds of millions of dollars every year trying to hook kids into the junk food way of life, making the United States the fattest nation on Earth, and the increases in obesity in the last 2 decades alone have skyrocketed. So Spurlock decided to put his film degree to use and make a documentary to see just what kinds of damage eating fast food can do to the human body, as well as see what a stranglehold on the American public these corporations have.  He targets the biggest of them all, McDonalds, and limits himself to eating nothing but food from the Golden Arches for 30 days – breakfast, lunch and dinner.  He first gets a physical to determine his health status, and monitors the changes in his body as the experiment progresses.  Along with a decrease in his exercise, Spurlock finds that the fast food way of life is wrought with weight gain, and gives him headaches, nausea, and actually endangers some of his body?s vital organs. Yes, it?s not a very scientific way to conduct an experiment, and Spurlock clearly wants very badly to have issues and problems for the sake of having something to make a movie about.  In fact, you could do many such documentaries about eating or drinking the same things for 30 days and come up with unhealthy results (Gee, water is supposedly healthy, so lets keep drinking it until we drown and see it’s a deadly killer!)  However, he also wisely looks beyond the experiment at how hard it is for the American public to find out information about what kinds of things they are eating at McDonalds, such as the lack of available nutritional content brochures.  Spurlock also gives a lot of information about the dangers of obesity in the country, and how major corporations throw money at schools to ensure that their products are being given to young children, even at the cost of their health. Super Size Me has dark subject matter, but credit Spurlock for taking this very serious issue and making it an engaging and quite entertaining experience, while also offering a good deal of education to go along with it.  It?s clear that Spurlock is on a mission, and in doing so, change has been effected, which is the true mark of success for a scathing documentary.  Within weeks of the film?s debut at Sundance, McDonalds pushed forward a new kind of happy meal for health conscious eaters, the Adult Happy Meal. It?s hard not to think about this film after seeing it, especially as you pass a McDonalds.  It ingrains itself in your psyche and makes you really question just what kinds of things you are putting in your body, and how many of the unhealthy feelings you might have might be a result of bad eating choices.  For this reason, above and beyond just being entertaining and informative, Super Size Me ranks as one of the better films of 2004, and will probably significantly change the diet of tens of thousands of people across the country.

Punch-Drunk Love ***1/2 (out of 5)   (2002)

Cast: Adam Sandler, Emily Watson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Luis Guzman

Directed By Paul Thomas Anderson

I came out of watching PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE with a mixture of feelings, some of which I may never sort out. They are mixed in part because it is easily the best work in Adam Sandler’s not-too-varied career, but the film as a whole, while undeniably brilliantly directed, is my least favorite among Paul Thomas Anderson’s films. I’ve seen others knock P.T.’s previous work like BOOGIE NIGHTS and MAGNOLIA claiming they were pretentious films, and while I disagree mightily in both cases, I cannot defend PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE as strongly. Part of this is because Anderson is so talented a director that he knows how to use the score and camera movement to evoke feelings in the audience, and he pulls the strings of your emotions, and with cocky arrogance doesn’t mind that we know full well we are being manipulated. If pretentiousness is evidenced by showy displays, it also means that the director is confident that he has the skill necessary to pull off what he wants when he wants to. P.T. Anderson has the skill, and he knows it. Unlike Anderson’s previous works, PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE only revolves around one main character, Barry Egan, played by Adam Sandler. Sandler is a businessman with certain personal issues that make him very unhappy. He is socially inept and doesn’t get out much by choice, and his ability to control his mood is tenuous at best, frequently resulting in an outburst of insults, destructive vandalism, or uncontrollable sobbing. He wants to express himself, but years of ridicule and teasing from his seven sisters has resulted in long-term psychological problems, which Barry has recognized and now he seeks professional help. Having no real desire to take the initiative and get a shrink, Barry has a notion to call a phone sex company because they offer confidentiality and anonymity. However, this was a mistake, as the woman he chats with attempts to extort money from him, claiming that his life will be hell if he doesn’t send her more. Meanwhile, Barry meets Lena, a friend of his sister and the two make an odd couple, but oddly they work well together because, unlike his sisters who taunt him about everything, Lena is willing to accept him for all of his flaws. She likes to travel, which seems fortuitous because Barry has been saving up Healthy Choice pudding proofs-of-purchase to rack up frequent flyer miles due to a loophole in their rules that makes them scandalously cheap. As you can tell from the plot summation, PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE is a very complex film, not easily absorbed with full understanding as to its intent or meaning. Some people will find it quite satisfying, drawing up their own meanings and perspectives in finding something to relate to. Others will find the film frustrating, as the film doesn’t provide an easy comfort level, always seemingly on the edge of going somewhere but we’re never sure what. Anderson’s sense of music as an instrument to create mood is very evident here, perhaps a little too much, as he blends in beautiful music when Barry is feeling love or happiness, and discordant cacophony when his mind is perplexed with frustration, fear or anxiety. Such implementation will divide viewers between those who find it too arty and pompous and those who think it brilliant and ingenious. My personal take is a little of both, finding the boldness and effectiveness intriguing, yet wishing Anderson employed much more subtlety to it, as the obviousness of it pulls us out of the story to instead reflect on Anderson’s technique, adding to the feeling of him as a filmmaker with pretense. PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE is full of so many rich elements and well-developed subtexts, that with only some minor tweaking here and there, it would have been a great film. Instead it is ultimately one of those films that has great moments, terrific performances and profound meanings but in the end is somehow unsatisfying. I’d recommend this film wholeheartedly to the art-house film crowd, fans of Anderson, and also fans of Adam Sandler who maintain that he could be a fine actor if he weren’t pigeonholed into making dumb comedies. I’d also recommend this, but with some reservation, to those who enjoy quirky romantic comedies, off-beat cult films, and those who like foreign, particularly French cinema, with multi-textured storylines whose meanings aren’t always evident. Last but not least, if you are going to watch this because Sandler’s dumb comedies make you laugh and want to see more, I would spare you the frustration and recommend you stay away from PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE.

As good as Sandler’s performance is, it’s Anderson is the real star here. Hopefully he won’t make it so ostentatiously evident in the future.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Reviewed By Scott Weinberg Posted 04/30/04 19:04:57

"A close-up look at Spielberg’s Classic in its new DVD form." (Awesome)

First, the easy part: E.T., the immortal classic and worldly beloved family flick, is finally available on DVD. This is, of course, a cause for rejoice, as the movie is as wonderfully entertaining as its ever been. I?m one of those 30-year-old movie animals who saw this movie probably five times during it original theatrical run, and time has not sullied the film one iota in my eyes. E.T. should be considered annual family viewing (much like The Wizard of Oz), and I suspect it?s a movie that will be adored 150 years from now.OK, now that I got that out of the way, I have a whole slew of minor complaints (minor in that the numerous things irritating me in no way damage the experience of the film). I?m not about to broach that whole ?special edition? debate that everyone loves to argue about. Masters Spielberg and Lucas have the right and the power (and the money) to ?facelift? their own films as much as they see fit. I (and millions more) don?t have to like it, but that?s just life in the big city. (The big city being Hollywood, where old product sells just as well as new product… sometimes better!)But here?s what bugs me: the changes stink. Sure, they?re totally unnecessary to begin with, but they also just stink. The entire presence of the titular alien shifts in the new version; in an effort to make the creature more lifelike, the director has also (ironically enough) made him more cartoonish. Like many old-time fans, I know this movie right down to E.T.?s facial expressions… all of which are completely jumbled in the enhanced version. I realize that ?If it ain?t broke, don?t fix it? is one hoary old clich?, but it?s never been truer than in this case. Heck, the original version made 34 billion dollars and is adored from Spain to Swahili; why not leave well enough alone? Surely making a public outcry about how awful guns (and the word ?terrorist?) are draws more uncomfortable attention than just leaving a harmless family flick as is!The new scenes are more jarring than anything, as anyone familiar with the film would recognize these sequences as if they were lit in bright red neon. Spielberg can attest all he wants about ?things I DID want in the film?; all I see are a few bells and whistles jammed in so the theatrical re-release (and enhanced DVD) will earn a few extra bucks. Call me cynical if you like, but just four paragraphs ago I was swooning like a little girl over how much I truly adore this movie.(It?s at this point that I?m feeling a bit guilty for not actually ?reviewing? the movie, but c?mon; who needs me preaching about a movie you?ve seen eleven times? It?s E.T.! You know this is one of those truly special movies, and if you don?t then no amount of soppy and nostalgic praise from me will convince you otherwise.)So the whole CGI rhinoplasty/re-release/money-grub aside, we?re still talking about a phenomenal piece of pop movie art. (And most importantly of all things, the ORIGINAL unaltered, unblemished, and gloriously widescreen 1982 version is included in this 2-disc set, so all complaints are tempered with a sense of overall satisfaction.) BUT… what?s with this wacky DVD fiasco? The original press release from Universal promised two separate editions: a 2-disc set with the enhanced version and a supplemental disc (approx. $20.00), and a 3-disc Ultimate Gift Set. The fancy set was meant to offer a swanky case, some additional supplements, AND the 1982 version. In other words, the original version was meant to be released only as part of a $60.00+ gift set. Then late word got out that both versions were in both packages. Combine this discrepancy with Universal?s announcement that no screener copies would be made available to the online press, and you?re looking at some rather odd goings-on.Buzz states that Spielberg intervened at zero hour and asked that both versions be included on both sets, and that Universal?s sudden embargo was borne out of concern for their Gift Set?s profitability. (Again, this is just conjecture on my part, but there is a certain logic to my paranoia.) Several people I know initially planned to purchase the ?expensive set? and were thrilled to learn that they wouldn?t have to after all.So now comes the release, and there?s a whole separate parcel of frustration. Now, this may sound like the silliest complaint ever made about a DVD release, but here goes:The spine doesn?t have the title on it.I know; I?m a freak, right? But I have about 150 DVDs, all of which have the titles printed on the skinny side of the DVD case. As pedantic as this sounds?that?s how you know what movie you?re pulling off the shelf! Sure, E.T. has a lot of nighttime scenes, but am I supposed to recognize the DVD case just because it?s blue? I digress; it?s a silly complaint about a silly packaging screw-up.As far as the extras go… I was unenthused. Sure, you could just blame me for not dropping cash on the bells and whistles edition, but heck - I just want the movie. Period. Since the goodies are offered, I?ll comment:Disc 1 contains a rather sweet feature: an all-new soundtrack, recorded at a live concert/re-release screening. Imagine watching the movie with an orchestra in your living room, and you get the idea. (Sadly, you must sit through the new & improved edition of the film in order to enjoy this track, but I?d say it?s probably worth it. Better yet, just play this audio track just for the music!)There?s a 20-minute featurette that brings us behind the scenes of the March 2002 event, focusing on composer John Williams? meticulous timing and his orcherstra?s astounding musical skills that were needed to pull the experiment off. This is a mildly interesting addition, though it?s not something you?ll ever visit twice. Rounding out the first disc is a wholly ridiculous feature called ?Space Exploration?, which is the ?E.T. voice? offering quick lessons on each planet of the solar system. Of interest solely to aspiring astronomers or those smoking a joint.Disc 2 starts out with a 25-minute behind-the-scenes featurette… most of which centers inevitably on the digital facelifts and new scenes. (I?m not one to quote Shakespeare, but after hearing such effusive arguments as to why the enhancements were so necessary, I got the idea that the filmmakers were ?protesting too much?.) All the principals drop by to heap truckloads of gushy love-talk all over each other (I?m not saying the sentiments aren?t sincere; I?m saying they?re bland and redundant) in between plugs for the re-release (why try to sell me an item I just purchased three hours ago?), but fans of the movie will certainly enjoy the few snippets of on-set footage, FX tests, and general monkeying around. Not an awful featurette, but it?s basically one part meat and three parts Jell-O. (Oh yeah: there?s a considerably longer version of this feature on the three-disc set, so start saving your pennies.)A twenty-minute reunion piece is pretty solid, in that it offers all the central players (Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote, Dee Wallace, Drew Barrymore, Robert MacNaughton, producer Kathleen Kennedy, and Spielberg himself) in a laid-back and chatty style. Though a good segment of this feature is a rehash from the prior supplement, there are a handful of warm and wistful nuggets passed around. (Coyote and Thomas offer some particularly insightful comments about the movie.) This is mostly a back-pat-a-thon, but they?ve kind of earned it on this flick. The ?Designs, Photographs, and Marketing? gallery offers all sorts of production stills, artwork, character concepts, FX designs, and marketing hoo-hah. Worthy of a perusal, nothing more. You?ll also find 2 DVD trailers, which leads me to my final little whine: the original theatrical trailer for E.T. is not included. (Not surprisingly, that 1982 trailer is (in a weak move) included in the pricier Gift Set.) I?m not at all interested in trailers for a 2002 E.T. re-release or for the DVD set of Back to the Future… while the original trailer for a movie as beloved as E.T. is actually something historical. (I know, I know: I get what I deserve for not dropping the sixty bucks, right?)Lastly are some typical promotional additions: cast/crew bios (hey, this Spielberg guy could have a real career!), production notes, and a few ?special announcements? about how The Special Olympics, adoption, and theme parks are all Universally intertwined.Forgive my rambling and non-traditional review, but this release has got me all sorts of confused. My feeling about the allegedly enhanced version can best be summed up by something that Henry Thomas (now a grown-up) says during an interview about how E.T.?s eyes MADE the character real. The enhanced E.T. doesn?t have those eyes. He now has big goofy Scooby-Doo eyes; the character is different, the movie suffers. But, like I said way back at the beginning: I now own yet another classic movie I loved as a kid, so none of the extra B.S. (pointless gimmicks, fluffy supplements, questionable marketing ploys, etc.) really matters.I?d never wish failure on a guy like Steven Spielberg, but I?m partially thrilled that the big 20th Anniversary re-release didn?t go over like gangbusters. Maybe he?ll think twice about ?enhancing? whatever infinitesimal flaws he may find in Raiders of the Lost Ark. (You just know he?s considered it.)Spielberg’s often stated that the new edition of E.T. was made for a ?new generation?; parents, do your kids a favor: stick with the real version and I bet they?ll appreciate the difference one day.

"A light fluffy pop music filled romantic comedy" (Worth A Look)

Lance Bass’ foray into the world of cinema wasn’t as painful as I thought it was going to be. ?On The Line? is a cute romantic comedy that will leave all the teenyboppers swooning with all the pop melodies roaming through it. The supporting cast includes: Emmanuelle Chriqui as Abbey ? the love interest, fellow *NSYNC mate Joey Fatone as Rod ? best bud, Gregory Qaiyum as Eric aka GQ ? roommate, James Bulliard as Randy ? best bud, Tamala Jones as Jackie ? Kevin?s nemesis at work, Dave Foley as Higgins ? Kevin?s boss, Jerry Stiller as Nathan ? the copyguy/mentor, Amanda Foreman as Julie, and Dan Montgomery Jr. as Brady ? Kevin?s nemesis from High School and the writer who catapults the story in the public eye. Also some fabulous cameos from the likes of Richie Sambora as ?The Mick?, Al Green, Ananda Lewis, Joanie Laurer as Chyna, and also from *NSYNC Chris Kirkpatrick and Justin Timberlake. This movie is definitely worth the rental and a bucket of popcorn.Bass portrays Kevin Gibbons in ‘On The Line’. Kevin is a character who has everything going for him. Then he meets Abbey commuting on the ?L? train. Abbey turns out to be the girl of his dreams, his soul mate if you will and all Kevin can think to say is, ?It was a pleasure commuting with you.? Known by his friends as the guy who ?chokes? when it comes to girls, Kevin fails to get her name and number. Thinking he missed his golden opportunity with the girl of his dreams, Kevin plasters Chicago with posters to find his mysterious Train Girl. Much to his chagrin and through some local media coverage, Kevin becomes the target of every young woman’s affections in the Chicago area. What ensues is a story about many miscommunications between Kevin, Abbey and his friends; who attempt to date all the women that respond to the poster campaign. This works for a awhile until the real train girl, Abbey herself calls and GQ attempts to take her out with hilarious consequences. Then things seem to go downhill for Kevin and his friends, their scheme to date all the women blows up in their faces. Kevin gets dissed and ultimately ignored when he sees Abbey and she won?t even look at him, he gets taken off the Reebok account at work, and his mentor Nathan ends up in the hospital. In the end his friends attempt to right their wrong and find Abbey, he gets put back on the Reebok account, and Nathan finally tells him the ?baseball? story.Through its use of music and flashbacks this is a thoroughly entertaining movie. The imagery and messages are good ones for its intended audience. Paper airplane and baseball clich?s mixed with messages of love and you will be loved along with put yourself ?ON THE LINE? and maybe just maybe that love will be returned. Come on now how can a movie guest starring Al Green and his music go wrong. I for one fell for it Hook Line and Sinker and will be picking up the soundtrack soon. This is just further proof that I will forever remain a kid at heart and a sucker for romance.

Shrek The Third has exploded onto DVD and its more of the same. More of the same ogre, more of the same writing and more of the same basic fairy tale premise of good vs evil in a sugary family friendly environment. It is all more of the same but its far from ho-hum and does it well.

Shrek and Fiona are having to take on the duties of being the active king and queen of Far, Far Away. When we left him, the King was quite literally croaking. They’re not very comfortable in these roles, so the King says to them, “If you can find the heir to the throne and bring him back, the Kingdom will be in good hands, then you can return to swamp and live your lives.” Which is what they want to do.

Shrek 3 really doesnt offer anything terribly new but we do get to meet a bunch of new characters and also re-acquaint ourselves with the characters from the past films. It has your typical witty writing and characters with humor that works on all levels for adults and children.

Although Shrek 3 can not touch the first Shrek film, what sequel or in this case three-quel can? Shrek 3 is a family friendly fun film that moves along quickly and will provide a fun and entertaining experience for your family movie night. I would say this is a must rent or buy ( depending on your tastes ) for fans of the original SHREK.

The Movie:

This 1998 picture, directed by Penelope Spheeris (”Wayne’s World”) takes a couple of very talented comedians and pairs them with a less-than-entertaining screenplay. Not that the idea behind it all isn’t slightly entertaining. Marlon Wayans plays Darryl Witherspoon, a college senior who is desperately seeking a job at a major brokerage firm. He has four jobs to make ends meet and his competition is the mousey Scott (David Spade, walking through the picture).

One day, after attempting just about every which way to make money, he finds himself signing up for an experimental procedure, the result of which leaves Darryl with super-heightened senses, which he can’t take, at first. The comedy generates a few good laughs as Darryl can’t stand even the slightest sound, which is amplified hundreds of times over. Then, he finds that, with a little work and a little control, he can focus these senses and use them to his advantage.

Yet, instead of the clever gags that the comedy could have constructed out of this plot, “Senseless” instead chooses to go the toilet-humor route. Wayans is a gifted physical comedian - that’s for sure, but it seems like only a few rare moments during the movie are improved. Other than that, the film sticks to the screenplay, which is lacking in inspired moments.

The performances are generally very good. Wayans has talent beyond what many of the comedies that he’s in have him perform, which is especially evident in his terrific performance in “Requiem For a Dream”. Spade is fine here, but he’s simply doing an average version of the kind of sarcastic comedy that only he does best. Also good in supporting roles are Rip Torn as the head of the company that Darryl aspires to join and Tamara Taylor, who has fine chemistry with Wayans, playing the classmate who he falls for.

Senseless” certainly isn’t too bad. It’s good for a few minor laughs here and there, and it’s good nature carries it farther than it probably should have gone. Yet, although it does have a somewhat original idea, it doesn’t do a great deal with it, nor does it really provide talented performers with great dialogue.

Note: Check out a pager that provides stock readouts during one scene in the movie. If you look closely, one of the companies is “Spheeris, Inc.”

The DVD

VIDEO: “Senseless” is presented in 1.85:1 non-anamorphic widescreen, back when Buena Vista was in their senseless “non-anamorphic” period (I’m too funny.). Anyways, for a non-anamorphic presentation, this DVD presents enjoyable image quality. Sharpness and detail are quite good, there’s even a nice amount of depth to the image at times. Some dimly lit interior scenes appeared flat and slightly murky, but these were small complaints.

There’s some other complaints that I had throughout the presentation, but they were minor. A few traces of pixelation were visible, as well as a couple of tiny bits of edge enhancement. Print flaws were almost completely absent, with the exception of a few speckles here and there. Overall, there wasn’t a great deal to be concerned about.

Colors looked fine, appearing bright and natural throughout the movie, with no instances of smearing or other problems. Flesh tones also looked largely accurate. Not without some small concerns, but overall, this is a decent early effort from the studio.

SOUND: “Senseless” is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. For a comedy, this is actually a fairly entertaining soundtrack. The music has terrific presence, offered by the surrounds as well as posessing a decent amount of bass. Surrounds are also used nicely for ambient sounds and the occasional jokey sound, such as when Darryl steps onto the ice to play hockey - the pucks flying at him shoot from the surrounds. When Darryl’s super-senses kick-in, so do the surrounds, with some agressive use of sound effects.

Audio quality was fine, as the music delivered fine power, ambient sounds and effects sounded crisp and dialogue sounded natural. Certainly not demo material, but much better than I would have expected.

MENUS:: Very basic non-animated main menu with film-themed images as backgrounds.

EXTRAS:: Nothing.

Final Thoughts: “
Senseless” has a few moments of hilarity, but most of it is rather lacking and low-key. Disney’s DVD provides fine audio/video quality, but nothing in the way of supplemental features. Might be worth a rental.
